Evanston Woman Fights Off Attacker Who Tried To Strip Her: Police

According to Evanston police, the man pushed the woman to the ground and attempted to take her clothes off.

EVANSTON, IL — The Evanston Police Department has charged a Chicago man on suspicion of attempted sexual assault against an Evanston woman.

According to the victim, a 27-year-old woman, she was attacked in the 1000 block of Dobson Avenue at 12:50 a.m. on Oct. 10. She told police that an unknown man approached her, made contact and pushed her to the ground.

After that, the man attempted to remove her clothes and choked her, she told police.

"The victim fought off the attacker, and a neighbor responded after hearing her screams. The suspect then fled," EPD said in a statement.

Paramedics from the Evanston Fire Department treated the woman's injuries at the scene.

In just a few hours after the Evanston incident, three similar incidents were reported in Chicago in the Roger's Park neighborhood. In each incident, the victims described a similar suspect, police said.

Detectives in Evanston and Chicago worked together to develop a suspect and identified 21-year-old Yeison Diaz-Gomez of Chicago as the suspect in all four incidents.After being given a photo lineup, the Evanston victim identified Diaz-Gomez as the man she believed attacked her.

The Chicago Police Department arrested Diaz-Gomez on Monday and Evanston police continued their investigation. According to detectives, Diaz-Gomez admitted to being in a struggle with the woman in Evanston.

The Cook County State's Attorney's Office reviewed the investigation and approved felony charges for attempted aggravated criminal sexual abuse and aggravated battery. Diaz-Gomez appeared at a detention hearing on Tuesday at the Cook County Courthouse.
