EVANSTON, IL — A two-alarm fire broke out Tuesday in a three-story Evanston home as contractors worked on the house, fire officials said.

Fire crews were dispatched to the 1000 block of Greenwood Street around 4 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a house fire, according to Division Chief Kim Kull.

Contractors, who were able to get out of the house before firefighters arrived, reported spotting flames in a void space near the roof.

The first firefighters on scene opened up the ceiling and used a pair of hoses to get water onto the fire, Kull said.

Fire conditions quickly changed, and commanders escalated the fire department's response to a second alarm. Several departments from neighboring communities came to assist.
