Gurnee Man In Custody, Wheeling Man Wounded In Evanston Shooting: Cops

Police said the gunman was upset by a financial deal gone bad.

EVANSTON, IL — One person suffered minor injuries after shots were fired during a struggle over a gun Sunday in Evanston, police said.

Shortly after 4 p.m., officers were dispatched to a report of a shooting at Ashland Avenue and Payne Street, where they found a gun, an injured man and the alleged shooter, a 66-year-old Gurnee man, according to police.

The preliminary investigation into the shooting indicated that the Gurnee man was upset over an alleged financial deal gone bad, police said.

While standing in the parking lot of the Evanston Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 2128 Ashland Ave., police said the Gurnee man pulled out a gun during a confrontation with a 36-year-old Wheeling man.

As they struggled over the gun, the Gurnee man fired two shots before the Wheeling resident and his brother subdued him, according to police.

Police said the Wheeling man suffered a minor hand injury, and no one else was hurt.

Prosecutors are expected to file charges in the case late Monday, with more details expected to be released Tuesday.
