EVANSTON, IL — The results are in from last week's Evanston Patch reader survey of the best ice cream places in town.

Although several respondents bemoaned last year's permanent closure of the local Andy's Frozen Custard location, three existing creameries emerged as the top recommendations among readers.

Hartigan's Ice Cream Shoppe, 2909 Central St., was the top vote-getter in our unscientific survey. It was recommended by 37 percent of the nearly 100 respondents.

One reader said its "neighborly vibe, friendly staff and long time local establishment that feels a bit "retro" and old school (in a good way)" makes it the best spot for ice cream in town.

Some favorite orders among Patch readers included: Mackinac Island Fudge, Black Cherry, Caramel Collision or a chocolate milkshake.

Frio Gelato, 1301 Chicago Ave., picked up the support of about a quarter of respondents and was the next most popular shop in the poll.

"The gelato is very creamy and delicious and the flavors are very unique," one respondent said of Frio.

The Evanston Kilwin's location at 1724 Sherman Ave. came in third, with about 16 percent of readers' votes.
