ICE Activity Near ETHS Propmpts Campus Closure Protocol

EVANSTON, IL — Reported federal activity near the area of Evanston Township High School prompted officials to implement a closed campus protocol Friday.

All students at the high school are required to stay on campus during lunch and free blocks. Evanston/Skokie School District 65 Superintendent Angel Turner said the district will also hold indoor recess for the day.

Federal authorities are not present on school grounds, according to ETHS, and there is no threat to the school community. The closed campus protocol was activated as a proactive measure.

"While we currently have no indication that federal activity will occur on our campus, we are implementing this proactive measure to help ensure the safety and well-being of all students," school officials said in a statement.

Families of students were encouraged to check their emails for additional information.

The city confirmed there has been reports of increased federal activity in multiple locations around Evanston and encouraged the community to stay calm, alert and informed. Police have responded to numerous calls of ICE activity, including an incident at Oakton and Asbury.

The incident is clear and each report is being reviewed, authorities said.

Evanston stands as a Welcoming City, enacting a resolution this month that declared all city-owned property as ICE-free zones.

Evanston adopted the Welcoming City Ordinance in 2016, limiting local involvement in federal
immigration enforcement. In 2025,the city further enhanced the ordinance adding more safeguards and address growing concerns among immigrants in Evanston.

"This ordinance ensures everyone in Evanston can live with respect, safety, and dignity, irrespective of their immigration or citizenship status," city officials said.
