Shooting Cancels 4th Of July Fireworks, Closes Beaches In Evanston

Following a mass shooting in Highland Park, all activities scheduled for Monday afternoon and night have been canceled.

UPDATE: Due to a mass shooting in Highland Park Monday, all 4th of July related activities in Evanston have been canceled. Also, all city beaches are closed.

The City of Evanston said in a post on its website:

"The City has canceled the July 4 parade and fireworks following a tragic shooting event in Highland Park. While there is no known threat to Evanston, events have been canceled out of an abundance of caution. Evanston's swimming beaches will also be closed for the remainder of the day — please stay out of the water."

EVANSTON, IL — After two years of modifications or cancelations, residents in cities and counties across the country are looking forward to many of the traditional Independence Day activities that mark the summer holiday. July 4 is tomorrow, so there’s still time to find out what Fourth of July fireworks and festivities are going on near you in 2022.

The Evanston Fourth of July Association marks the 100th anniversary of its founding this year. The nonprofit association was established after a child was injured while playing with fireworks a century ago.

All city community centers, recreational facilities and public library locations will be closed Monday for the holiday. The Levy Senior Center and Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center will also be closed on Sunday.

Lighthouse, Lee Street and South Boulevard beaches will be open for swimming Monday, but Clark Street Beach will be closed to allow for the setting up of the fireworks display.

Here's a list of Evanston's scheduled festivals and parades to start planning for Monday's national holiday:

Where: Baker Park, Forest Avenue and Keeney Street; ETHS West Field, Church Street and Dodge Avenue; Fleetwood-Jourdain Center, Foster Street and Darrow Avenue; Kamen Park East, South Boulevard and Barton Avenue; Lincolnwood School, McDaniel Avenue and Grant Street; Robert Crown Center, Main Street and Dodge Avenue; Willard School, Central Park Avenue and Park Place.

What: Evanston 4th of July Kids Fun Run
When: 12:45 p.m. (registration available online or starting at noon on July 4)
Where: Ackerman Park, Central Street and McDaniel Avenue

What: Evanston 4th of July Parade
Where: Central Street at Central Park Avenue
When: 2 p.m.

The 2022 parade theme is "Celebrating For 100 Years-The Evanston Fourth of July Association."

What: Evanston July 4 Concert and Fireworks
When: 7:30 to 9 p.m. Palatine Concert Band, with fireworks approximately 9:30 p.m.
Where: Dawes Park, Sheridan Road and Church Street

Fireworks are set to be visible from most lakefront parks, and residents can tune in 90.5 FM for audio accompaniment.
