Kindergarten Play Dates, 'Garden Talk' in District 65

School starts in District 65 in one month, on Monday, Aug. 26, meaning it's time for meet and greets, play-dates and more. Parents of incoming kindergarteners, note the many opportunities for your kids to get to know their teachers and fellow classmates, listed below.
For all kids in grades kindergarten through eighth grade, District 65 will host a community non-violence back to school concert on Aug. 11 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Levy Center, 300 Dodge Ave. Kids are invited to participate and showcase their talents; contact evanstoncbk@gmail.com to sign up.

For 2013-14, the school choice process is closed. Last round selection letters will be mailed by August 1st. Applications are still being accepted for the African Centered Curriculum (ACC) program at Oakton Elementary School for kindergarten through 5th grade. To access an ACC application, you may download and print from the web at http://www.district65.net/parentsandstudents/Choice or pick up a copy at the Joseph E. Hill Education Center at 1500 McDaniel Avenue in Evanston. Applications must be returned to the Information Services Department at 1500 McDaniel Avenue in Evanston or via email to parents@district65.net
Spread the word, Dawes School PTA is hosting kindergarten play dates this summer on the Dawes kindergarten playground. This is a great opportunity for families and children to get to know one another before the start of school. Dawes School is located at 440 Dodge Avenue. The play dates are scheduled from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. on July 27th and August 24th.Save the Dates - Willard School PTA is hosting kindergarten play dates this summer. Incoming kindergarten families are invited to meet their child(ren)'s future classmates and have fun playing at the park. The play dates also give parents a chance to get to know one another. Play dates are scheduled for Saturday, July 27th (10-11:30am) Willard Playground South;Thursday, August 8th (3:30-5pm) Bent Park; Thursday, August 22nd (4-5PM) Willard Playground South; Bent Park is on Central St and Cowper. Willard School is located at 2700 Hurd Ave.
Willard Elementary School PTA is having back-to-school play dates the week before school starts. The events are for parents to bring their kids to school to see old friends, make new ones, and welcome our new families to Willard. Willard faculty will not be present.

Orrington Kindergarten Playground Dates at Noah's Playground Incoming Orrington kindergarten families are welcome to come to Noah's Playground near Lighthouse Beach to play and meet other kindergarten families. The PTA's Kindergarten Transition Team will host these informal playground get-togethers on the following dates:
- July 28 from 3:30 - 5:00 pm
- August 5 from 3:30 - 5:00 pm
- August 24 from 10:00 - 11:30 am
The Kingsley PTA welcomes our newest Comets and will host kindergarten play dates on Wednesday, August 14th at 9:00am and Saturday, August 17th at 9:00am. These play dates will take place on the Kingsley playground and last about an hour. This PTA sponsored event is a way for kids and parents to meet and get to know each other before the school year starts. Siblings are more than welcome too. Please note: the school will not be open and there is no access to water fountains or bathroom facilities on this date.

Washington School Kindergarten Play Dates will be held on the Washington School kindergarten playground 914 Ashland Avenue on Wednesday, July 31st at 5:00 p.m. and again on Friday, August 23 at 5:00 p.m. with the latter date being Washington-spirit day for attendees to wear green and gold.
The District 65 Family Center invites you to the Loving me workshop with Mrs. Lozano at 1500 McDaniel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1:00p.m. to 2:30p.m. The 5 session workshop is on July 30, 31 and August 1, 6 and 7. Parents can learn how they can improve themselves to help their children grow healthy, happy and productive. Space is limited to 15. Call 847.424.2440 to reserve a spot. Topics covered will include: Discipline, Structure, Responsibility, improvement of self esteem. Child care and transportation will be provided, call for details.
PTA Council in partnership with the Illinois PTA is hosting a Treasurer Training workshop for local school PTA Treasurers on Tuesday, July 30th, 7:00-9:00pm at the Joseph E. Hill Education Center (Board Room), 1500 McDaniel Ave., Evanston. For more information, contact the PTA Council.
FC- Dewey Elementary will be holding two incoming kindergartner meet and greets in the month of August. Please come play and meet new friends on the Dewey front playground Thursday, August 8 from 10-12 and Saturday, August 24 from 3-5. The Dr. Martin Luther King Literary and Fine Arts School PTA to host Kindergarten/1st Grade Play Dates that will take place on Sat, August 10th at 10:00 a.m.and Sunday, August 25th at 3:00 p.m. at the King Arts Playground, 2424 Lake Street. This is an opportunity for kindergarten families to meet each other and speak with experienced first graders and their families. Snacks will be served.
SAGE's "Garden Talk" on August 20th at 10 a.m. in the Jordan Teacher Center, 1500 McDaniel, 2nd Floor, is an opportunity for local school volunteers, teachers and others to provide an update on school gardens and hear special guest, Jordan Ryan, District 65's Food and Nutrition Services Coordinator, introduce and discuss the newly created Guidelines for School Garden Tastings. Free seed packets from Whole Foods will be distributed at gathering. Please RSVP to: lhynd@sbcgloba.netWashington School New Family Orientation and potluck - On Tuesday, August 20th, families new to Washington School are invited to a PTA-sponsored potluck dinner on the playground preceding Principal Ellison's informal orientation session. The potluck dinner will be picnic style on the playground at 6 p.m. Participants are asked to bring a dish to share. Orientation with Principal Kate Ellison will begin at 7:00 p.m. and be held inside the school building. For more information, contact the school at 847 905-4900.
Washington School Kindergarteners will have a chance to meet their teachers during scheduled visits arranged from August 20th to 23rd when students will get locker assignments and have a chance to get to know their teachers before the first day.
