Memorial Day 2022 In Evanston To Honor The Fallen
The day after Memorial Day in Evanston this year, a community lantern floating event will commemorate those lost to COVID-19.
EVANSTON, IL — Memorial Day is this Monday, May 30. Most local, state and federal offices in Evanston the rest of Illinois will be closed for the in observance of the holiday, and various local businesses will be open with modified hours.
Evanston American Legion Post 42 is hosting a Memorial Day community reflection at Fountain Square and hold a ceremony to honor servicemen and women who have died.
The event will include non-denominational reflections, singing and remarks from local elected officials and veterans group leaders, including both Post 42 and Tech. Sgt. William B. Snell VFW Post 7186, according to city staff.

Assembly at the Sherman Avenue and Davis Street square begins at 10 a.m., with the ceremony scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m.
Lincolnwood is holding Memorial Day parade, starting at 10:20 a.m. at Pratt and Cicero avenues. Following the parade, a ceremony is set to take place at Madeleine's Garden in Henry A. Proesel Park, 6915 Kostner Ave., according to village officials.

The event was originally hosted by Lincolnwood American Legion Post 1226, but has since become a village-sponsored event under the purview of its parks department. The parade portion of the event was canceled in 2020 and 2021. There will be a bike parade to the ceremony after the traditional parade.
Memorial Day parades are also planned for downtown Chicago — where the route begins with a ceremony to lay a wreath at the Daley Center, 50 W. Washington St., before heading south on State Street from Lake Street — and in Park Ridge, where the parade begins at Talcott Road and Cumberland Avenue and ends at Hodges Park, 5050 Butler Place..
In Evanston, services such as mail delivery and pickup and garbage pickup will be delayed for Memorial Day, with yard waste and recycling collection set to take place one day later than usual. Friday condo trash and recycling collection is scheduled to take place June 3.
The day after Memorial Day, Kids Create Change is holding a community lantern floating ceremony that aims to provide people an opportunity to come together to honor the losses that have resulted from the coronavirus pandemic, including loved ones, homes, jobs, relationships, celebrations and more through the collective act of releasing floating lanterns into the Arrington Lagoon on Evanston's lakefront. The event is sponsored by Evanston ASPA and scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
