NU Officials Confirmed 3 New Cases of Mumps Involving Students

University officials say five students total have been infected with the virus, the Daily Northwestern reported.

Northwestern University officials confirmed three new cases of mumps involving its students, two of the students are currently on campus, while the other lives in Chicago’s northern suburbs, the Daily Northwestern reported.

Dr. John Alexander, executive director of Health Services for the university, said the three new cases are probably secondary cases stemming from the initial exposure in June and that two students left campus before showing symptoms, the website reported.

The initial case of mumps on Northwestern’s campus was confirmed on June 18.

The mumps virus causes fever, headaches and swollen salivary glands under the jaw and there could be serious complications when adults or teenagers, especially males, get mumps, according to the IDPH’s website.
