Open Letter To Mayor Daniel Biss From 2nd, 9th Ward Evanston Residents

More than a dozen residents say Evanston mayor's endorsements of City Council candidates are "way out of bounds and wildly inappropriate."

Thirteen residents of Evanston's 2nd and 9th wards responded to Mayor Daniel Biss' letters last week encouraging Evanstonians to vote for candidates that he appointed last year.

Mayor Biss;

With respect for your years of service to our state and community, we , the undersigned residents of the 2nd and 9th wards, write to express our dismay at the letter we received from you on March 9, via email, endorsing two candidates running for the 2nd and 9th ward seats on council. While we recognize your right to have appointed both of the candidates who are currently seated and are now running in this special election, we firmly believe that it is the sole responsibility of the voters to choose our ward’s Council member. To use your powerful position as Mayor as an influencer through this widely distributed letter, is in our opinion, way out of bounds and wildly inappropriate. The residents of the 2nd and 9th wards are very capable of doing our own research, attending forums, speaking with each candidate and evaluating them on their individual merits. We can then independently and democratically choose the candidate that we would like to represent us on council.

Respectfully yours;
