EVANSTON, IL — After undergoing extensive renovations, an expanded Northwestern Medicine Sports Medicine and Imaging Center reopened at 1704 Maple Ave. on Dec. 1.

The approximately 20,000-square-foot facility offers same-day and next-day appointments for injuries, as well as full diagnostic imaging services, hospital officials said.

“Patients are now able to see our highly regarded sports medicine experts in a shorter amount of time,” Dr. Adam Bennett, the center's medical director of orthopaedics, said in a statement.

“These are the same experts that regularly work with players from our local professional and college sports teams, offering the highest level of care to those in and near Evanston,” Bennett said.

Doctors practicing in a variety of areas — medicine, orthopaedic specialties, physical therapy and radiology imaging services — are all based at the center, which also features a physical therapy gym on the first floor. Northwestern Medicine now occupies the entirely of the first and second floors of the building that formerly housed a Cyclebar.

“Our goal is to provide exceptional quality and care to the Evanston residents and surrounding communities,” Dr. Ajay Chapa, Northwestern Medicine's medical director of ambulatory imaging. “Musculoskeletal conditions are the biggest contributor to morbidity in this country yet having access to experts in this field can be challenging."

Imaging services offered at the center include: Comprehensive breast imaging; MRIs with state-of-the-art AI; interventional spine and musculoskeletal injections; ultrasounds; CT scans; X-rays and DEXA body composition tests.

The Maple Avenue facility also houses the Northwestern Medicine Comprehensive Breast Center clinic, which currently offers screening and diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds, and breast MRIs and will begin to offer biopsies on site in March, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Northwestern Medicine Director of Ambulatory Breast Radiology Dr. Sonya Bhole is eager to offer new services to patients in the area.

“We know that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, with the majority having no family history,” Bhole said.

“However, healthcare disparities and barriers to screening still exist and these were only exacerbated after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic," she added. "We are hoping to help close these gaps by providing timely access for more women in need of breast imaging.”
