Safe Place For LGBTQIA+ Teens At Evanston Library

The group will meet monthly and help teens develop and understand identity while building community.

EVANSTON, IL — The Evanston Public Library is offering teens a chance to get some help in developing and understanding their identities, according to a release from the library. The group will meet monthly at the library's Teen Loft.

"Developing and questioning one’s identity is a rite of passage during the teenage years. This can be a difficult process, and sometimes especially so for LGBTQIa+ teens," the library said in the release.

The group kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 19, focusing on community building, knowledge, self-awareness and help in advocating for one's self, the release says.

The library say many LGBTQIa+ teens, especially those of color, are bullied and experience mental health issues. "These teens may be on the margins or isolated. Creating a safe space at the Library speaks to this need for acceptance and community," the library said in the release.
