Spring Leaf Blower Season Begins In Evanston, Runs Through May 15
In November, the Evanston City Council approved updates to the City's ordinance regarding the use of gas-powered leaf blowers.
The City of Evanston is reminding residents of seasonal restrictions on gasoline- and propane-powered leaf blowers.
In November, the Evanston City Council approved updates to the City’s ordinance regarding the use of gas-powered leaf blowers, including reducing the days and hours when leaf blowers are permitted in Evanston, and phasing out gas-powered leaf blowers by April 1, 2023.

When are gas-powered leaf blowers permitted?
Backpack-mounted or hand-held gas-powered leaf blowers are allowed for use between March 30 and May 15 and between October 15 and the first Thursday of December on the following days and hours:
- Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.
The use of gas-powered leaf blowers is prohibited on City holidays. Any person who uses a leaf blower or permits the private or commercial use of a leaf blower on their property during these times is subject to a fine of up to $250.

Seasonal restrictions do not apply to electric-powered leaf blowers.
Residents are also reminded that blowing or raking leaves into the street is a nuisance, and can cause flooding and block sewers. Visit the City's website for more information.
Leaf blower pledge
Evanston landscapers are encouraged to take the City’s pledge to comply with the leaf blower ordinance. The pledge, as well as a list of businesses that have completed the pledge, can be found at cityofevanston.org/landscaping.
All landscape contractors are also required to register with the City and must complete a sustainable landscape management survey. Residents are encouraged to make sure their contractor is registered.
