Victim Flees Gunfire From Evanston Man: Police

An Evanston man faces up to 15 years in prison for opening fire at a fleeing vehicle.

EVANSTON, IL — An Evanston man faces jail time in connection to a shooting that sent a victim fleeing in his car, police announced Thursday.

The Evanston Police Department responded to a report of gunshots in the 1700 block of Payne Street at 9:28 p.m. on May 12. According to police, a man who was sitting in his car at the time was approached by another man who asked if he was from the area.

The driver then attempted to leave, causing the suspect to fire a handgun at the vehicle, striking it several times, according to police.

"Fortunately, the driver was not injured, and there were no other gunshot victims or injuries related to this incident. Officers checked the area but did not locate the offender," EPD said in a statement.

Police recovered six 9 mm shell casings at the scene and were also able to obtain video footage of the suspect firing the gun. According to police, the footage showed the man fleeing the scene on foot after the shooting.

After distributing images of the suspect throughout the police department, investigators identified the suspect as 32-year-old Evanston resident Sean Logan. Police located and arrested Logan in the 1100 block of Church Street on Wednesday.

The Cook County State's Attorney's Office reviewed the investigation and approved a felony charge of aggravated discharge of a firearm. According to the Illinois General Assembly, aggravated discharge of a firearm is a Class 1 felony and carries a potential sentence of 4 to 15 years.

The firearm used in the incident was not recovered.
