What Are The Best Nursing Homes On The North Shore?
U.S. News & World Report released ratings for more than 700 nursing homes in Illinois. Fewer than one in eight were "high performing."
EVANSTON, IL — Two of the top-rated nursing homes in Illinois are located on the North Shore, according to new ratings from U.S. News and World Report.
The "Best Nursing Homes" ratings spotlight nursing homes that demonstrate excellence in short-term rehabilitation or long-term care, said Zach Adams, senior health data engineer at U.S. News, in a release.
"This year, newly available data on weekend staffing and infection rates that led to hospitalizations provides even more information about how nursing homes rate when it comes to the safety of their residents," Adams said.

The 2022-23 ratings are the 13th published by U.S. News. This year, 51 Illinois nursing homes were rated high performing in the short-term category, with 35 getting the top rating for the longer-term.
Nursing homes in Evanston and Lake Forest were among the 10 nursing homes in Illinois that received top scores in both categories of the rankings.

Another similarity: both nursing homes — The Mather in Evanston and Lake Forest Place — have nonprofit ownership models. Observational studies have indicated that for-profit ownership leads to inferior care.
According to U.S. News, its rankings are drawn from the same data used to produce the five-star quality rating system published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, or CMS.
But while the federal agency ranked 37 percent of home as above average, U.S. News considered only 16 percent to score above three on a five-point scale, according to the rating's methodology.
Nursing homes were excluded from being considered high performing if they had a staff COVID-19 vaccination rate below 75 percent, had unreported or low-quality coronavirus data, received an abuse icon from CMS or was on the agency's special focus list.
Nursing homes could call be restricted from a high performing rating if they exceeded appropriate rates of antipsychotic drugging of residents, emergency room visits or rehospitalization rates.
