2 Shot At St. Mary Cemetery; 1 In Custody, NW School Lockdown Lifted

Northwest Elementary School was placed on a secure lockdown for 40 minutes during an active shooter situation at the cemetery.

EVERGREEN PARK, IL —Two people were shot and one person is in custody following a shooting late Wednesday morning at St. Mary Cemetery in Evergreen Park.

Around 11:48 a.m., the Cook County Sheriff’s Police responded to a shots-fired call at St. Mary's. Officers discovered that two people had been shot. Both were taken to a nearby hospital with gunshot wounds. One person has been arrested, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Dist. 124 officials were notified at noon by police of an active shooter situation at the cemetery behind Northwest Elementary School. The building was quickly placed on a secure lockdown for about 40 minutes.

Around 12:40 p.m., Evergreen Park police notified the school that the suspect was in police custody and that situation was no longer active, D124 Supt. Jenna Woodland said in an email to parents.

“We were directed that students could resume their normal activities and out of an abundance of caution, we briefly transitioned to a Hold Classroom status,” Woodland said. “Students were safe during the entire situation and we are so pleased with the cooperation of our students and staff.”
