Chicago Man Shot 2 People During Burial Service At Cemetery: Sheriff
A Chicago man is facing attempted murder charges after he shot two people resulting from a fight at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, police say.

EVERGREEN PARK, IL — A Chicago man accused of shooting two people following a fight during a burial service at a cemetery was ordered detained following a pretrial hearing.
Roger Nava, 23, appeared Friday before Judge Lisette Mojica in Markham on three felony counts of attempted first-degree murder.
Around 11:48 a.m. Wednesday, Cook County Sheriff’s Police responded to a shooting at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Evergreen Park. Officers learned that a man shot two men, ages 25 and 24, after a fight during a burial service at the cemetery. Both men were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

During their investigation, police said they learned the shooter, later identified as Nava, also pointed his gun at a third man.

Sheriff’s police found Nava, who matched the description of the shooter, minutes later near the cemetery and took him into custody. Two loaded firearms were recovered from Nava’s possession, according to a sheriff’s news release.
As police searched St. Mary, Northwest Elementary School, located behind the cemetery, was placed on lockdown for about 40 minutes. Felony charges were approved Thursday against Nava.
The Cook County State’s Attorney approved felony charges against Nava on Thursday. The Chicago man appeared at the Markham Courthouse. Nava is due to appear Feb. 5 at the Bridgeview Courthouse.
