Cougar Run, Car Show Fun and More Local Weekend Events

What's happening this weekend near Evergreen Park, Oak Lawn and Chicago's 19th Ward.

While the leaves might be changing and the pumpkins ripe for the picking, there is still plenty of time to enjoy the last brush of late summer weather. To help you jumpstart your weekend planning we found some great local events. If we missed one give it a shout out in the comments section.

Evergreen Park Classic Car and Hot Rod Show

Yukich Field, 89th and Kedzie, will be full of classic cars and stylish hot rods as part of the village's annual car show. Open form 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. the event will also feature live music and food from area vendors. 

Saturday, Oct. 5

Cougar 5K Run/Walk

St. Xavier Univeristy's annual family fun event starts on campus and winds its way through Evergreen Park. The race starts at 9 a.m., but registration gets going at 7 a.m. 

SXU Homecoming

Saint Xavier University's homecoming celebration culminates at 1 p.m. with the Brewhouse Tailgate Tent featuring SXU's very own microbrew from Horse Thief Hollow, Cougar Ale. $10 admission includes all beverages within the Brew House as well as snacks. The football game starts at 5 p.m. 

Drop-In Firefighter Story Time at Oak Lawn Library

In recognition of fire prevention month stop by the library at 10 a.m., 9427 S. Raymond Avenue, to hear an Oak Lawn firefighter read stories and show fire equipment. 

St. Bernadette All-Parish Reunion 

The Evergreen Park parish will welcome all current and former parishioners, school alumni, current and former teachers and friends and family for a 4 p.m. Mass and dinner to follow at 6 p.m. All are invited to Mass, anyone staying for the reunion and dinner afterwards must be 21 or over. Tickets are $45 in advance and $50 at the door.

Little Red Schoolhouse Arts and Crafts Fair

For the 48th year, painters, carvers, photographers and other artists will be out at Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center, 9800 Willow Springs Road, to sell their work which has been inspired by nature. In addition to the sale there will also be folk singers, art activities, a fall colors walk and refreshments. The fair runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and you can park at Camp Kiwanis and hike to the nature center, or at Pioneer Woods, on 107th Street just east of Willow Springs Road. A shuttle bus will transport visitors to the nature center.

Southwest Symphony "Timeless Melodies" Concert

The new season for the orchestra starts with a 4 p.m. concert at Trinity Christian College, 6601 W. College Drive in Palos Heights. Tickets, from $5 to $25, can be purchased in advance at 708-802-0686, and online at www.southwestsymphony.com, and at the door.

Cancer Support Center Fall Walk of Hope 5K

Join the Center and over 1,200 community members in Homewood to remind those touched by cancer that they do not walk alone. The pledge goal is $100 per walker. The Walk of Hope raises funds to provide free programs and support services for persons diagnosed with cancer. Register online at www.cancersupportcenter.org or call the Walk hotline at 708.365.1201 for more information. Registration fees include: Individuals (aged 15 and up) $25; Children (aged 5 to 14) $15; Kids under 5 are FREE! No pets.
