According to school officials, support for Leo’s “world renowned” Choir has been building since last spring, when the student singers and Choir Director Mrs. LaDonna Hill electrified the America’s Got Talent judges and a national viewing audience.
“This is about more than just a performance,” said Dr. Rawls, a 1993 graduate of Leo. “It’s about showcasing the spirit of our city, the strength of our mission and the brilliance of our boys.”

The entire Leo community has been rallying support with watch parties, donations and, now, preparations to cast votes, according Dan McGrath, president of Leo and a 1968 graduate. A national voting audience will determine which acts advance beyond the quarterfinals.
“Mrs. Hill has been able to draw the best performances from these young men, and Tuesday should be no different,” McGrath said. “The Leo Choir intends to earn the votes here locally and win over the hearts of a national viewing audience.”
As Leo Catholic High School approaches its 100th anniversary, this milestone performance underscores the school’s mission to uplift and inspire.
“Our Leo Choir Boys embody the spirit of brotherhood, resilience, and excellence that has defined the institution since 1926,” Dr. Rawls said. “Leo’s young men are proud to represent the South Side of Chicago. They believe that being a member of the Choir gives them the ability to dream even higher.”
“We like to call them ‘The World-Renowned Leo Choir’,” McGrath said. “To watch Mrs. Hill is to experience how skillfully and lovingly she teaches and directs our young men. The Choir has become one of the school’s most visible and valuable assets. Their energy and talent has ‘wowed’ audiences all over Chicago.”
From Soldier Field to “The Bean” to the Palmer House lobby at Christmas, “Have Voices Will Travel” seems an appropriate tagline for the on-the-go young singers, always accompanied by Dr. Rawls, who often stops by the music room on his morning rounds to hear the singers practice.
Each school year concludes with the Leo Choir performing at Leo’s graduation.
The Leo choir’s most recent public appearances have prepared them well for Tuesday’s “live” performance:
* A June 14 appearance and performance for the citywide celebration of Cardinal Blasé Cupich’s Holy Mass celebration for Pope Leo XIV at Rate Field.
* A June 19 appearance at Wrigley Field to sing the National Anthem and “Lift Every Voice” in celebration of Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, also known as Freedom Day.
