Burglar With A Sweet Tooth

Nov. 1: A pudgy burglar broke into a candy store and made off with thousands of dollars’ worth of chocolate mints.

Oak Lawn police were dispatched to Cupid Candies at 4707 W. 95th St. around 3:21 a.m. in response to a burglary.

When police arrived on the scene, they discovered that the front entry door had been shattered, allowing the thief or thieves to access the candy shop.

Police said that a witness from a nearby business observed a dark blue, full-size fan with temporary plates parked in front of the candy shop at the time of the robbery.

According to the witness, he saw a male white going into the business, but thought he was a deliveryman.

In fact, the opposite was true, when the man emerged from the candy store and started throwing items into the back of the van.

The witness immediately called police and walked toward the candy store. When the man saw him, he jumped into van and fled eastbound on 95th Street.

Police described the suspect as a five-foot-nine-inch male white, weighing approximately 250 pounds, and wearing a blue puffy jacket with a hood.

The store owner soon arrived, and told police that the store had been stocked 54 boxes of chocolate mints that were to be shipped out that morning.

Only five boxes were left in the store. The owner said it did not appear that anything else in the business was disturbed.

The owner told police that other Cupid Candies locations have been burglarized in the past.

The sweet-toothed crook got away with 49 boxes of chocolate mints for a combined loss of $2,200.
