Dangerous Temps In Frankfort Wednesday; Where to Stay Cool

FRANKFORT, IL — The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from 10 a.m. through 7 p.m. Wednesday in Frankfort. The high temperatures and humidity could cause heat-related illnesses.

Peak afternoon heat index values of 104 to 107 degrees are expected, according to the National Weather Service.

Two cooling centers will be available to Frankfort residents who need an escape from the dangerous heat.

Frankfort Village Hall, 432 W. Nebraska St., will be open as a cooling center during normal business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Frankfort Township building, 11000 W. Lincoln Highway, will also be open as a cooling center during regular business hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents are asked to call ahead at (815) 469-4907 so that staff can best serve residents in need.

Here are some tips for staying cool during the excessive heat:

• Drink plenty of fluids.
• Stay in an air-conditioned room.
• Stay out of the sun.
• Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
• Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
• When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
• Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
• Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.
• To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
