Frankfort Awarded $1.6 Million Grant For Trail Project

The Village said the project will expand the current trail that ends at Pfeiffer Road and Sauk Trail.

FRANKFORT, IL — The Village of Frankfort has received a $1.6 million grant through the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program for a 1.5-mile, 10-foot wide multi-use patch, the Village shared in a release.

The grant is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The Village said the project will expand the current trail that ends at Pfeiffer Road and Sauk Trail, improving and expanding access to key destinations across Frankfort.

The new path will start at Pfeiffer and Sauk, extend south along Pfeiffer to Laraway Road, and then continue east along the north side of Laraway Road for a mile to 80th Avenue.

This extension will link the eastern part of the Village and Commissioners Park to the broader Frankfort trail system—providing enhanced access to the historic Old Plank Road Trail, the Village said.

“This is an exciting step forward in improving our community’s infrastructure and quality of life and has been a priority of the entire village board,” Mayor Keith Ogle said in a release. “This new path not only offers a safer and more sustainable transportation option but also strengthens access to one of the region’s most treasured recreational trails and provides new connectivity for residents on the east side of the Village.”

The $1.6 million grant is part of IDOT’s ongoing commitment to expanding non-motorized transportation options and supporting infrastructure improvements at the local level, according to the release.

Project design and engineering will begin in the coming months, with construction timelines and updates shared as the project progresses.
