Frankfort Won't Transition To Lake Michigan Water

The Frankfort Village Board voted to continue using its current well water supply.

FRANKFORT, IL — At the Sept. 8 committee of the whole meeting, the Frankfort Village Board voted to continue using its current well water supply, and will not transition to Lake Michigan water.

The vote comes after community feedback and surveys. The Village said a resident survey showed that 68.2 percent of respondents opposed the change.

"We are deeply grateful to everyone who shared feedback through surveys, meetings, and discussions—your input was essential in guiding this important decision for our Village," the Village said on its Facebook.

According to Board documents, the Village was first approached late last year by representatives from the Village of Oak Lawn with a proposal to connect to the Oak Lawn Regional Water System, which uses Lake Michigan water.

The Village said the preliminary estimates of such a transition would be around $74 million, which would increase water rates.
