Drunken-Driving Deputy Crushes Frankfort Man: Sheriff

An Indiana sheriff is pushing one of his deputies to resign Monday after an alleged drunken driving crash on Sunday.

An Indiana sheriff demanded the resignation Monday afternoon of a high-ranking officer who he said was drunken driving when he drove into a minivan and seriously injured a Frankfort man Sunday near the Gary Air Show.

Sixteen-year Lake County Sheriff's Department officer Guy Mikulich, 37, reportedly registered a blood-alcohol content of 0.15 after committing the hit-and-run accident that injured Derrick Dircks, 34, of Frankfort, reported The Times of Northwest Indiana. The incident occurred around 4:50 p.m. Sunday, after which Dircks was taken to Northwest Memorial Hospital in Chicago for treatment of severe injuries.

The Times said Mikulich was in uniform in his unmarked 2011 Ford Crown Victoria when he struck Dircks' parked 2014 Toyota Sienna minivan.

"Dircks told police he and his family had watched the air show and returned to their minivan, which was legally parked on Oak Street," the story indicates. "Dircks went to the back of his Toyota to place something inside when he and his vehicle were struck by the Crown Victoria, police said."

Mikulich, who was demoted earlier this after a New Year's Eve scuffle, was on paid administrative leave Monday afternoon.
