Several Shots ‘Accidentally Discharged’ In Frankfort Square: Sheriff

The Will County Sheriff's Office said no one was injured and no arrests had yet been made.

FRANKFORT, IL — The Will County Sheriff's Office responded Tuesday to a report of shots fired in a Frankfort Square residential area.

At approximately 10:46 a.m., sheriff's deputies were called out to the 8300 block of W. Chestnut Court after a caller reported seeing four to five men arguing outside and then hearing gunshots, according to Will County Sheriff Deputy Chief Dan Jungles.

All the men fled when the gunshots went off, Jungles said, but deputies were able to find spent shell casings in the area and later found a vehicle that had been damaged. The homeowner was also not at the residence, but did return while deputies were clearing the residence, police said.

The homeowner told deputies that he had been transferring his legally owned firearm from the trunk of his car, which was parked at the end of the driveway, to his holster in his waistband, according to police. During this transfer, he missed his holster and "accidentally discharged" several rounds, police said.

The homeowner told police he left the scene because he didn't think he did anything wrong because the discharge was accidental.

Upon examining the evidence at the scene and speaking with witnesses, deputies determined the homeowners account of what transpired did not make sense.

No arrests have been made; however, sheriff’s detectives are investigating the incident, police said.

The Will County Sheriff's Office Investigation Division will follow up to gather more information.
