GLEN ELLYN, IL — Members of the Village of Glen Ellyn and the Glen Ellyn Park District recently gave their unanimous approval of a concept design that will transform the former U.S. Bank site at 453 Forest Ave. into a community event park.

The goal is to break ground on the first phase of the redevelopment in 2024 or 2025. The $2.8 million project will start with razing the current building and then move on to landscaping and park design.

The concept aims to link Prairie Path in the park in a "front yard" of sorts, according to an update from village officials. The park will feature a stage, a picnic area, terraced seats, reading lawns and other amenities.

Plans for the park include using it for musical performances and festivals in warmer weather. In winter, Community Event Park's central lawn could be converted to a skating rink.

The vision for Community Event Park began to develop shortly after the Village of Glen Ellyn bought the former U.S. Bank property at 453 Forest Ave. for $1.65 million in May. Shortly after, the village partnered with the Glen Ellyn Park District to begin workshopping design concepts.

“This investment in the Village’s Central Business District by both the Village and Park District will significantly enhance how and where events are carried out in the downtown area,” Village President Mark Senak said in a statement.

He added, "It will also serve as a catalyst for increased activity and attract visitors to support our downtown businesses.”
