LOMBARD, IL — A Chicago man is being held in DuPage County Jail after police say he fled a traffic stop while armed in Lombard Wednesday.

Denzel Guajardo-Ross, 30, was charged with armed violence, armed habitual criminal, manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the incident.

Police were called around 3:30 p.m. for a report of a car that had run a red light and was parked near Zen Leaf Dispensary at 783 Butterfield Rd. Guajardo-Ross, 30, is accused of getting into the car and disobeying an officer who tried to pull him over.

Prosecutors say Guajardo-Ross sped down Butterfield Road and made "multiple traffic violations" and hit "several occupied vehicles" before trying to flee on foot with a handgun. He was arrested near Butterfield and Camden, and officers reported seizing a 9mm Glock 43 handgun.

Officers also say they found 15 grams of cocaine in the car Guajardo-Ross had been driving.

“There is no question whatsoever that under Illinois law, as a convicted felon, Denzel Guajardo-Ross is prohibited from possessing a gun,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said.

He added, “It is alleged, however, that not only was Mr. Guajardo-Ross in possession of a loaded weapon, he was also found to be in possession of fifteen grams of cocaine and attempted to flee from authorities at a high rate of speed on a busy street in the middle of the afternoon during the holiday shopping season before crashing his car into other occupied vehicles. Thankfully, Mr. Guajardo-Ross’ alleged criminal activity did not cause serious physical harm to any innocent motorists or bystanders."

Guajardo-Ross is set to appear in court on Dec. 18.
