Week in Review: Glen Ellyn Man Indicted, Refuse Rates Trashed, Jersey Mike’s Opening

Thomas Hyland, 40, was indicted Tuesday on four counts of mail fraud and eight counts of wire fraud after an investigation into an alleged fraud scheme to obtain more than 20 residential mortgage loans totaling roughly $8.5 million from various lenders.

The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company received a $2,000 grant on Monday night. The money will be used to update technology for the Fire Company’s fire prevention and inspection programs.

Father and son team Bud and Raj Patel are opening a new Jersey Mike’s Sub in Glen Ellyn. The owners will be holding a fundraiser benefitting Glenbard West and Glenbard South boosters.

In August, Kay McKeen will celebrate the 22^nd anniversary of the nonprofit she founded. McKeen grew up in a family that lived the “waste not, want not” lifestyle. Back in those days, it wasn’t called environmental.

Glen Ellyn residents will see changes to their bills beginning in August. The village has a new contract with Republic Services. Residents will begin to see a recycling credit of $2.15. The amount will be evaluated annually based on recycling revenues.

Matthew Udelhofen is one of only a few students in the state to score a perfect composite score on the ACT. Udelhofen, a student at Glenbard West High School, received a 36 on his ACT.

A new study ranked Glen Ellyn No. 11 and one of the top commuter communities in the Chicago area. The No. 1 transit suburb was LaGrange. 

Only 2,000 tickets will be sold for the Wheat Ale Fest, which will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 4. The festival will feature 125 beers and 50 local and national brewers. VIP tickets have already sold out.
