At Summer’s End: Food for Kids Who Need It

It’s hot, it’s vacation time, and some kids in Glenview are hungry.

It’s a quiet crisis that happens every summer. As neighbors travel and enjoy their time off, the shelves at the Northfield Township Food Pantry begin to empty. Many children—the pantry serves more than 900 local families—risk missing meals, since they’re not in school to get subsidized breakfasts or lunches.

"We are so grateful to the Glenview Chamber of Commerce's Young Professionals Group for making a difference in the lives of so many who are food insecure in our community," said Northfield Township Supervisor, Shiva Mohsenzadeh.

Enter the Summer Food Drive, organized by the Glenview Chamber’s Young Professionals of Group (YPG). Friends and neighbors can contribute food at several business locations across the Village, and public institutions, such as the library. A full list of participating businesses is available on the Chamber’s website, www.glenviewchamber.com/calendar.

The Summer Food Drive runs through the month of August and September. Already some 30 businesses in the community are collecting food for the pantry, with more lining up to join the campaign.

“It’s important as residents, and business owners, in our community to come together to make sure we are taking care of our own. Organizing a food drive outside of the “standard” season is such a small gesture that we can do that can have a strong impact on those in need. So often we think of giving back during the holidays, but the need is year round and we want to make sure that our community knows that we support them as much as they support us,” says YPG’s Leader April Doremus of Blended Health & Smoothie Bar.
