Cause Of Death For Girl Who Died Following Dental Visit Released
The Spring Grove teen died following a dental extraction surgery at a clinic in Grayslake in July.
COOK COUNTY, IL — The cause of death for a 17-year-old Spring Grove girl who died following a dental visit in Grayslake has been released.
Sophia Farmer died in July from complications of a dental extraction surgery while under sedation, Natalia Derevyanny, director of communications for Cook County, told Patch Monday. Contributing factors include multiple neurologic abnormalities and a ARID1B gene mutation, she said.
The gene mutation is associated with multiple syndromes characterized by developmental delay and intellectual disability, according to the National Institute of Health.

Farmer was rushed to the hospital on July 24 from the dental clinic at 875 E. Washington Street in Grayslake, according to media reports. She died at 5:47 p.m. on July 24 at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Natalia Derevyanny, director of communications for Cook County, told Patch.
Currently, the cause and manner of Farmer's death is pending, Derevyanny said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office condcuted testing, including histology, to determine Farmer's cause of death.. Histology is the study of the microscopic anatomy of cells and tissues, focusing on their structure and how that structure relates to their function.
Derevyanna told Patch in August that cultures, toxicology and specialty consults were also being conducted as part of the investigation.
Farmer was described as having a "tender heart for others," according to her obituary.
"From the moment she came into our lives, Sophie filled our hearts with immeasurable love and laughter. She loved boating, camping, and she never met a dog that she didn't want to keep," according to Farmer's obituary.
