Cold Dog: Lake County Man Arrested for Leaving Pet Out on New Year's Eve

He's believed to be the first person prosecuted under the state's new anti-cruelty law.

A Lake County man who left his dog outside in the cold on New Year’s Eve as he partied in Chicago was arrested on Jan. 1 and may be the first person in Illinois prosecuted under the state’s new animal cruelty law.

The Lake County News-Sun reports:

Edwin Martinez, 25, was arrested Jan. 1 β€” the day the new law took effect β€” after police received a call about a dog running loose in the 1400 block of Sheridan Road in Winthrop Harbor. According to a police report, β€œofficers located the outside living quarters of where the animal had resided and observed there was no adequate shelter and no food or water.”

β€œThere was a doghouse, but it was not adequate toward the climate,” Winthrop Harbor police Sgt. Christopher Willets said.
