Grayslake Crash Victim's Family Seeks $50K; Alleges Driver Was Drunk

The family of a woman killed in a four-vehicle accident earlier this spring filed a lawsuit this week in Lake County Circuit Court.

The family of a woman killed in a Grayslake crash this past spring is seeking more than $50,000 via a lawsuit that alleges one of the involved drivers "consumed multiple alcoholic beverages" prior to the accident.

Dudley & Lake attorneys filed the suit Wednesday against defendant Shawn Flores, according to a Chicago Tribune report. It is on behalf of family members and the estate of Malia Johnson, the 54-year-old victim of the multiple-vehicle accident. Johnson owned and practiced at Hainesville Chiropratic.

"Attorney Marisa Schostok, also representing the Johnson family, said the law firm was 'reviewing the videotape from Shooters (Sports Bar and Billiards, Inc.), the bar where Flores was drinking minutes before the collision, to see if we can determine how much alcohol Flores consumed while he was there,'" the Tribune story says.

Police said Johnson was headed westbound on Route 120 near Battershall Road around 11 p.m. on May 13 when she was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle, leading to a four-car pileup. She was reportedly extricated and declared dead roughly an hour later at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

The lawsuit says Flores caused the accident because he was drunk and crossed the highway's center line.
