Mystery Of Missing Manhole Covers: Gurnee Police Seek Public's Help

Manhole covers have been reported missing around town and police are asking for the public's help in tracking down the thieves.

GURNEE, IL — The Gurnee Police Department is on the case of a somewhat odd crime after manhole covers began disappearing around town in recent days.

"It seems we've got a mystery on our hands. Our manhole covers are disappearing faster than your last slice of pizza at a family gathering," authorities said in a Facebook post this past week. "We’re on the case, but we need your help to stop these thieves and keep our streets safe and well-covered."

Here what authorities are asking of the public:

  • If you spot a missing manhole cover, you're asked to call the police department's non-emergency number at 847-559-7000, extension 0. The public works department will respond and make sure no manholes are left unsecured.
  • If you see someone actively removing a manhole cover, call police right away. Callers are encouraged to give police all the details regarding the perpetrator, including: license plate number, vehicle description and where they’re headed.

Meanwhile, residents are encouraged to watch their step while out and about in Gurnee since missing manhole covers can "be a serious trip hazard, sending you into a deep hole," according to police.

"So, keep an eye out as you walk around town. We don’t want you to become part of the mystery yourself," according to the Facebook post.
