Vasselli Law: Navigating the Legal Landscape for Municipal Success
Vasselli Law is the strategic partner communities need for success

As municipalities across Illinois face increasing demands for transparency, economic revitalization, and collaborative governance, Vasselli Law, LLC, is emerging as a vital partner in navigating the complexities of municipal law.
One example is the pivotal role lead partner James M. Vasselli played in the relocation of RealWheels to an empty industrial building in the City of Zion. This strategic move not only repurposed a vacant space but also boosted local employment and community revitalization in Zion.
Vasselli Law’s efforts are not just about closing deals; they are about building frameworks for sustainable growth.

“It’s not just about speed; it’s about doing it right the first time,” Vasselli said. “We strive to forge strategic partnerships with our clients and do more than just resolve legal disputes. We work with our clients to help communities accomplish their long and short-term goals.”
This dedication to thoroughness was exemplified in a recent acquisition of a critical parcel in Pekin, previously encumbered by liens. Through diligent legal guidance, the firm ensured the site is now poised for mixed-use development that promises to spur small business growth and enhance connectivity in the area.

In navigating the intricate legal landscape, Vasselli Law understands the importance of maintaining client confidentiality and managing potential conflicts of interest. Handling multiple clients in overlapping interests requires a nuanced approach. The firm adheres to strict protocols to ensure that confidential information is safeguarded, fostering a trusting environment where clients can feel secure in sharing sensitive details.
“This approach not only protects the interests of individual clients but also enhances collaboration among stakeholders in intergovernmental agreements (IGAs), reducing the possibility of conflicts,” Vasselli said. “We put a premium on ethics and knowledge and application of the law. Too often, law firms become mired in red tape, complicating straightforward solutions into drawn-out conflicts. That's not the case with us. At Vasselli Law, problem-solving is more than just our profession; it’s our passion.”
As communities reassess their legal needs, the debate between using a single law firm versus multiple specialized firms for municipal legal services becomes increasingly relevant.
“Sometimes clients change law firms; it’s simply part of the journey, and like any change, it opens the door to new possibilities,” Vasselli said. “When it happens, it must be addressed.”
Vasselli Law stands out by offering a comprehensive suite of services while emphasizing coordination among various roles, such as Village Attorney, Prosecutor, and Labor Counsel. The firm champions the idea that collaboration among specialists can yield effective results, ensuring that all professionals work in harmony towards shared goals.
“Transitioning from one attorney to another can often be a challenging process for municipalities,’ Vasselli said. “We recommend a structured approach to ensure a smooth transition. This includes reviewing existing legal files, ordinances, contracts, and litigation records to provide a comprehensive understanding of ongoing matters. By establishing a clear protocol for transferring open or pending cases, our firm minimizes disruption and allows for continuity in legal representation.”
Effective communication with elected officials is another cornerstone of Vasselli Law’s practice. As Village Attorney, Vasselli emphasizes the importance of guiding officials in understanding their legal and procedural roles. This involves not only providing timely legal advice but also fostering an environment where officials feel informed and empowered to make decisions.
When the Village of Dixmoor was notified by the Illinois Council of Police about a backlog of union dues the Village owed for 2022 and 2023, Vasselli worked directly with the union to provide the Village with some time to review payment records and independently corroborate the amount owed to the union. Once both sides agreed on the amount owed, the Village issued a check and Vasselli hand-delivered the check to ensure an amicable resolution.
“The total owed to ICOP for the two-year period was $3,666,” Vasselli said. “The payment issue was nothing more than oversight, but it was the kind of situation that could have ended up costing the Village even more than what was owed if the union filed a lawsuit. “Resolving matters like this is much easier when there is strong relationship and partnership between the client and the law firm.”
In addition to its legal services, Vasselli Law offers periodic training sessions, billing these sessions transparently while keeping clients informed about changes in applicable laws. This proactive approach to client education ensures that municipalities remain compliant and well-prepared in a constantly evolving legal landscape. Ultimately, Vasselli Law positions itself not merely as a legal vendor but as a strategic ally for municipalities, townships, and local governments.
“We value the attorney–client relationship as a true partnership,” Vasselli said. “A partnership built on trust, candor, and a commitment to putting the client’s interests first in every decision. That’s not a slogan or a soundbite; it’s how we do business. It’s proven in the reasonable rates and weekend and late-night calls and in person meetings. We are here to advance your agenda, full stop.”
By fostering collaboration, navigating complex legal terrains, and ensuring compliance, Vasselli Law stands as a beacon of support for municipalities striving for progress. Through strategic partnerships and unwavering commitment to client success, Vasselli Law, LLC continues to anchor efforts for transparency and economic growth across Illinois, one community at a time.
“As Colin Powell once said, ‘Great leaders are almost always great simplifiers,’” Vasselli said. “Our approach to the law embodies this philosophy, providing clear, effective legal solutions that allow communities to thrive.”
