'Good Trouble Lives On' Rally Planned In Highland Park

The "Good Trouble Lives On" rally in Highland Park is part of a mass mobilization that will take place on July 17.

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — Local organizers across the nation, including Highland Park, are planning a rally this weekend on the anniversary of the death of Congressman John Lewis.

Lewis was an American civil rights leader and politician, known for leading the Selma march in 1965, a landmark event in the history of the civil rights movement that became known as "Bloody Sunday." Lewis went on to serve 17 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives in Georgia's 5th Congressional District.

Lewis died on July 17, 2020 in Atlanta at 80 years old.

Area residents are asked to gather at 1707 St. Johns Ave. at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 17. The rally is intended to stand against recent actions from the Trump administration and, "remind them that in America, the power lies with the people."

"From voter suppression bills like the SAVE Act to the criminalization of protest, the Trump administration is launching a full-scale attack on our civil and human rights." organizers said in a statement.

The Highland Park rally is one of many planned across America, including many more events in the Chicagoland. More information can be found on Mobilize.

Organizers asked those who plan to attend the rally to abide by nonviolence rules. Participants will be expected to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontations.
