Swimmer Missing Following Rescue Attempt In Lake Michigan

Members of the public should avoid the area during the ongoing search, officials said.

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — Authorities have launched a search after a person went missing while swimming in Lake Michigan on Saturday.

According to a statement from the city of Highland Park, authorities responded to the Openlands Lakeshore Preserve in Fort Sheridan around noon after receiving a call about a distressed swimmer struggling in the water.

According to officials, a bystander attempted to help the swimmer but was unable to reach them due to Lake Michigan’s strong currents.

The Highland Park Fire Department water rescue team immediately launched search and rescue efforts focused on the swimmer’s last known location. The City of Highland Park Police Department also deployed the police drone to assist in the search.

During the search, officials said a member of the dive team was briefly reported missing; however, they were subsequently located and uninjured.

The search for the swimmer is ongoing.

Members of the public are asked to avoid the area to allow crews to continue dive operations.
