Garfield Crossing Building May Improve Alley to Relieve Delivery Traffic
A rough estimate is that the Village would have to pay $300,000-$400,000, but the project might help relieve the burden of delivery trucks parking in the downtown.
The proposed two-story mixed-use building that would be built at the southwest corner of Garfield Street and First Street in Hinsdale by Garfield Crossing LLS may also include improvements to the alley behind First Street to allow for improved traffic for truck deliveries, the Chicago Tribune reports.
According to the paper, the project already includes a 47-space parking lot and a 10-by-30-foot loading zone, but Village trustees and staff are considering a $300,000-$400,000 renovation of the alley as well, though problems include cost, increased traffic and the potentian for increased strain on old coal cellars beneath the alley.
"We're looking at this as a big-picture kind of thing of how can we improve the whole downtown area," village engineer Dan Deeter told the paper, though Laura LaPlaca, chairman of the Environment and Public Services Committee, warned that "it would be a significant [project], and it would be a village obligation,"
