HINSDALE, IL – A Hinsdale police officer is credited with saving the life of a stabbing victim earlier this year.

Early the morning of Feb. 9, Officer Matt Gallik was called to the victim, who was along Oak Street near the Hinsdale hospital, Village President Tom Cauley said at Tuesday's Village Board meeting.

The man has been stabbed multiple times in another town, suffering a wound to his abdomen, where he was bleeding profusely, Cauley said.

"Officer Gallik rendered first aid by bandaging and holding pressure on the wound as the fire department arrived and transported the victim to the emergency room," Cauley said. "According to emergency room personnel, without Officer Gallik's quick and decisive intervention, the victim likely would have died."

Cauley then presented the village's lifesaving award to Gallik. The officer's family and many of his colleagues attended.
