Hinsdale Eyes 5G Cell Antenna Request

Firm is also looking to install cell antennas in Clarendon Hills and Western Springs. Such antennas have at times drawn opposition.

HINSDALE — A 5G wireless cell antenna might soon be installed in Hinsdale.

Crown Castle submitted an application on June 17 to install the equipment along with a new utility pole just east of the intersection of Woodland Avenue and Taft Road.

At times, the installation of such antennas has drawn opposition in the western suburbs.

According to the building permit application submitted by Crown Castle, the installation of the antenna would begin in early October and finish in early December, if approved. The application did not disclose the estimated cost of the project.

The Houston-based company is looking to expand its small cell network and install cell antennas in Western Springs and Clarendon Hills as well.

"This will mean more coverage and capacity for smart technology, reliable cell phone coverage, faster downloads, and better connectivity. We are committed to working with local communities and government leaders throughout this process," the company said in a statement.

Crown Castle owns, operates and leases more than 40,000 cell towers and more than 80,000 miles of fiber optic cables, according to the company’s Twitter account.

Village Manager Kathleen Gargano said the application was being reviewed by a consultant to the village. Afterward, the village will determine if the application is in compliance with its rules and regulations. The Village Board does not need to vote on the application’s approval.
