HINSDALE, IL – The village of Hinsdale is looking to ask property taxpayers for another $332,000 next year.

That would amount to a 3.7 percent increase in the property tax levy, including new construction.

Outside new construction, the village wants to increase the levy on taxpayers by 2.9 percent. Under state law, the village is allowed to hike the levy on existing buildings by the inflation rate, up to 5 percent.

At Tuesday's Village Board meeting, Trustee Matt Posthuma said the village's tradition is to increase the levy by the maximum that the state allows. That's because the village's salaries, benefits and other expenses continue to increase, he said.

Other towns, including Elmhurst, Burr Ridge and Darien, do not necessarily raise their levies at the inflation rate. Darien, for instance, has increased its levy just once this century, officials say.

In Hinsdale, the property tax provides 43 percent of the income for the village's main account.

In Illinois, municipalities make up a small fraction of property tax bills, with Hinsdale's share at 7 percent. Local schools take up 80 percent of property taxes, which is not unusual.

Unlike schools, towns have more sources of income, including sales taxes and a share of the state's income tax.

The village must approve next year's levy by December.
