Hinsdale South High School Spanish language students were able to practice their linguistic skills Dec. 1 when they volunteered to help the Darien Lions Club.

Every year, the Darien Lions Club helps local families in need during the holiday season by delivering a holiday meal and gifts for young children. Many of the families speak Spanish, and the Lions requested help from upper-level Spanish students to make calls to confirm addresses, contact information, and details regarding the ages of the children to ensure appropriate gifts.

On Giving Tuesday, seven foreign language students from Hinsdale South volunteered their time to make these calls in Spanish. They met at the Darien Park District and applied their language skills to complete this task. Distribution of the baskets will take place Dec. 19.

The Darien Lions have sponsored the program since 1976. This year, they expect to serve 250 families. For more information on the program, click here.

The students are taught by Heather Alejandro, Fran Mirro and Amy Piccoli.
