Hinsdale Woman With Gun Charge Released

HINSDALE, IL – A woman who was accused of stealing a Hinsdale neighbor's gun has been released after she struck a plea deal with prosecutors earlier this month.

Debra A. Kaleta-Nigri, 61, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of unlawful possession of a weapon, according to court records. DuPage County prosecutors dropped the felony charge of possession of a stolen firearm.

She was given 72 days in the county jail, with credit for the 34 days she had already served. She was eligible for 50 percent off her sentence for good behavior.

Kaleta-Nigri was out of jail two weeks ago when she was arrested three times in one day in Elmhurst. She is on probation for two years.

In late September, she was evicted from her house in the 800 block of West North Street in Hinsdale.

During the eviction, a cleaning company was removing Kaleta-Nigri's belongings when it found an AR-15 underneath a bed, a loaded magazine with 25 rounds, and a shipping envelope with the gun's instruction manual, police said.

The company turned it over to a sheriff's deputy who was overseeing the eviction.

Kaleta-Nigri later gave police her version of how she ended up with the gun.

For weeks before her eviction, Kaleta-Nigri was repeatedly charged with trespassing in neighbors' homes.
