Typically, packages have been taken from front porches soon after delivery. Sometimes it can take several days or weeks for a resident to learn a package was delivered and possibly stolen.
The police department is sharing the following tips, recommended by the major shipping carriers (USPS, FedEx and UPS) to help protect your valuable gifts:

- Customize your deliveries. Most carriers now provide for the ability for you to customize delivery options. You can change the time and location of delivery, request a signature upon delivery and even ask the package to be held if you know you’ll be out of the house at time of delivery.
- Consider an alternate destination. When you order something online, consider sending the package to your workplace or to a family member, friend or neighbor who is home during the day to accept delivery.
- Request a signature. Many packages today are sent without requiring a signature for delivery. If you’re shipping something of high value — or you just want to be sure items aren’t left unattended — you can require a signature for packages to be released. Either the shipper or the recipient can make this request.
- Request a vacation hold. If you’re planning a holiday trip, request a vacation hold so valuable packages are not sitting unattended for a long period of time.
- Leave special instructions for the driver. Major carriers allow you to leave special instructions, which may include letting your driver know you want a ring—or a knock. You can leave instructions for drivers to always ring your doorbell or knock on your door when a package is being left.
- Consider a surveillance camera. Surveillance cameras act not only as a deterrent, but also as a great tool to help investigators locate suspect(s) that may be involved in this type of crime. If you buy cameras, consider signing up for the Village of Hinsdale “Block Watch” program. More information about this program can be found online.
If you observe behavior that is unusual or suspicious, contact the Hinsdale Police Department by calling 911. It is important to report an accurate description of the person and their clothing. If you see a vehicle, note the color, make, style, and/or license plate.
