Make Hinsdale Intersection 4-Way Stop: Village

The lack of a sidewalk prevents crosswalk markings, an official said.

HINSDALE, IL – Hinsdale officials are proposing a four-way stop near a school in the northwest part of the village.

The intersection is Walnut and Adams streets, a block west of Monroe Elementary School. Now, yield signs are on Walnut.

"Residents have expressed concerns about the need for stop signs and crosswalk striping," Deputy Police Chief Thomas Lillie said in a memo last week to the Village Board.

But east-west Walnut, which leads to Monroe, lacks sidewalks west of Adams. Because of that issue, crosswalk markings are not a possibility, the village said.

"During arrival and dismissal times, (village) staff has observed the presence of adults, caregivers with strollers, and children navigating the intersection and street due to the inadequate sidewalk infrastructure," Lillie said.

One block to the east is the T-intersection of Walnut and Monroe Street, which is a three-way stop and has a crossing guard. Walnut and Adams has no guard.

According to the memo, village staff has thoroughly evaluated pedestrian patterns with the arrival and dismissal of Monroe students. The school is planning to add full-day kindergarten next school year, which is expected to increase pedestrian traffic, Lillie said.

The Village Board plans to review the proposal at its meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Village Hall, 19 E. Chicago Ave.
