Police Find Owner of Abandoned Gun Found by 12-Year-Old Boy

The gun apparently fell off of the man's car and into the street.

Police found the owner of a gun discovered by a 12-year-old boy on a Clarendon Hills street yesterday, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The juvenile found the Smith and Wesson Bodyguard 380 in the street and immediately gave it to his father, who called 911, Police Chief Boyd Farmer told the Tribune.

The police found the gun’s owner the same day. The owner, a man who lives on the 300 block of Ruby St., said he put the gun, in its case, on top of his car while he was loading things into his vehicle. Forgetting it was on top of the car, he drove away and the gun fell off of his roof and into the street.

Both the DuPage County State’s Attorney and the Illinois State Police were involved in the investigation since there was a firearm involved.

Since there was no intent for the gun to be harmful, Farmer said, there will be no charges against the owner.
