Some Rentals 'Overburden' Clarendon Hills: Memo
The village proposes a way to deal with nuisance rental properties.

CLARENDON HILLS, IL – Certain rental properties have an "outsized impact" on Clarendon Hills' public safety resources, so the village is proposing a way to deal with the issue, according to a memo.
On Monday, the Village Board plans to review a proposal to let its staff inspect problem rental properties.
Other non-home rule towns have established legally defensible rental registration programs that include inspections, according to a memo from Village Manager Zach Creer and other officials.

Riverside recently started a full rental registration program with an annual required inspection for all such properties, the memo said.
By contrast, Clarendon Hills does not recommend a full program now. Rather, it wants to give the staff the power to conduct annual inspections of properties with nuisances or code violations that are "overburdening" the village, the memo said.

By addressing such issues, other towns have seen a reduction in crime and police calls, officials said.
The village said the time seemed right because of more calls at problem properties and an increase in multifamily housing and annexation, among other reasons.
The registration fee would be $25 a unit, meaning it would cover costs but not generate money for the village, the memo said.
