HINSDALE, IL – The 900 block of Monroe Street is unlike most in Hinsdale, officials acknowledged Tuesday. It's possible that could change.

The village plans to hire an engineer to design a road project for the block between Ninth and 55th streets. The work is set for next year.

It has ditches and no curbs, which is relatively unusual in Hinsdale.

"It's like the street that Hinsdale forgot about," Trustee Scott Banke said at a Village Board meeting. "Is there a reason why we're not doing storm sewers there and basically making it like every other street? I realize there's not an insignificant cost."

George Peluso, the village's public works official, said the street appeared to be one of those "unimproved old township-style roads." During the design phase, he said, the village would look at options for the street.

"We'd really have to see how that impacts the budget," he said. "It's an unusual block where we have this open ditch system."

Officials identified other unusual areas that are similar to the 900 block of Monroe. They included The Woodlands subdivision northeast of County Line Road and 55th Street, Bonnie Brae west of Madison Street, and Glendale Avenue, which forms the northern boundary with Oak Brook.
