HINSDALE, IL – Hinsdale Central High School said it has received reports of students being dropped off on the four-lane 55th Street in front of the school, between Madison and Grant streets.

In its weekly newsletter Thursday, the school said the stopping of cars on 55th Street causes backups in traffic and jeopardizes student and driver safety.

The school pointed to a state law that prohibits drivers from stopping on roadways and impeding traffic.

Several signs are on 55th Street informing drivers they are not allowed to stop there.

The school suggested drivers drop off students in a safe location with a proper crossing – for instance, a block or two north or south of campus.

Another option, if using the circle drives, is to drop off students before 7:30 a.m., the school said.

The school noted the 1995 death of 15-year-old James McCarthy when he was struck by a car in front of Central.

Central warned that students must use marked crosswalks. The school said that if they don't, the dean's office or Hinsdale police will take action:

  • First offense: a documented warning to the student and notification to parents
  • Second offense: a call home to parents
  • Third offense: a citation

"(W)e have implemented as many safety measures as feasible," the school said. "Students and families should not jeopardize safety for convenience."
