ELMHURST, IL – A man who tried to break into an Elmhurst car dealership earlier this week ran away from officers toward a quarry, police said.

Daniel Mainz, 20, of Westmont, was taken to the DuPage County Jail, according to a police news release.

Shortly before 11 p.m., Mainz was arrested on the east bank of the Salt Creek just south of North Avenue, according to the news release.

Police said they found a brick lying by the front door of the dealership office. A security camera video showed Mainz throwing the brick several times into the glass door of the business, police said.

Police also said Mainz left a bicycle and a backpack containing burglary tools near the dealership.

Mainz was charged with attempted burglary, attempted possession of burglary tools, criminal trespassing, trespassing on state land, and resisting and obstructing an officer.

Officers from Darien, Hinsdale, Addison, Lombard, Oak Brook, Villa Park, DuPage County and the DuPage County Forest Preserve helped during the incident.
