A Hidden Lifeline for Veterans: Understanding VA Aid & Attendance Benefits

Every community has heroes who’ve served, and some of them are now struggling with the cost of long-term care. Whether it’s assisted living, home care, or skilled nursing, expenses can add up quickly.
But here’s something many veterans and their families don’t realize: the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers a special monthly payment called the Aid & Attendance benefit (and a related Housebound benefit) that can help offset those costs.
It’s one of the most underused benefits available to veterans, and it can make a real difference.
What the Benefit Covers
The Aid & Attendance benefit provides additional funds to qualifying veterans or surviving spouses who need help with everyday activities, such as bathing, dressing, eating, or getting around.
It’s not a new program, but it’s one that flies under the radar. The extra payment is added to a veteran’s pension and can help cover care in an assisted living community or even in one’s own home.
Who Can Qualify
You may be eligible if you meet these conditions:
- You’re a veteran who served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day during a wartime period.
- You received an honorable discharge.
- You meet financial requirements, based on income and assets (your home and vehicle typically don’t count).
- You need help with activities of daily living, or you’re largely housebound due to a permanent disability.
Surviving spouses of qualifying veterans may also be eligible.
How Much It Can Help
While amounts change annually, the 2025 benefit can be as high as:
- $2,795 per month for a married veteran
- $2,358 per month for a single veteran
- $1,515 per month for a surviving spouse
That money can help pay for caregiving support, home care, or residential living expenses.
How to Apply
Applying does require paperwork, but it’s worth the effort. Full instructions are available at va.gov, or you can check with your Assisted Living facility.
